University of Nebraska Residency Requirements
The Office of Graduate Studies determines initial residence based on the information provided by the student at the time of application. E. Asylum, Refugee or Permanent Alien: A person who has applied for or been granted permanent residency or has applied for or been granted asylum or refugee status and who has settled in Nebraska for educational purposes for a period of at least 12 months. Students who qualify for one of the residency categories listed below must register to complete and submit the University`s “Application for Study Residence Classification”. Persons wishing to stay for study purposes must have their application signed by a notary who certifies the accuracy of their declarations (Division IV, Affidavit of Intent to the Application). If it is subsequently determined that the information contained in an application has been falsified, the applicant may be subject to disciplinary action by the university before being allowed to continue enrolling at the university. These disciplinary measures are determined individually and may include measures such as disciplinary probation or suspension, expulsion from the university, or reimbursement to the university of the difference between tuition fees paid and tuition fees for non-residents. It is important for students who are considering college and who are not Nebraska residents to know the effects of the residency policy they may have on their financial preparation for college. All students who did not graduate from high school in Nebraska or who did not live in Nebraska long enough to determine residency status are automatically classified as non-residents. Students who qualify for one of the residency categories listed below must register to complete and submit the University`s “Application for Study Residence Classification”.
The last day for the residence permit of one semester is the last day of registration (6th day of the semester). All students must register for the semester in which residency is requested and register for courses. If you do not register for the period for which residency is requested, the residency application will be cancelled. Applications deemed incomplete after the last day of application will be declared invalid. If a student is not eligible for residency for study purposes, there are several programs to cover tuition fees for non-residents. These programs are listed in our Residency Programs section. A person who moves to Nebraska primarily to enrol in a Nebraska post-secondary institution is considered a non-resident for study purposes for the duration of the visit. Enrolling more than half (7 semester hours or more) of a semester at a Nebraska university, college, or community college in the 12 months immediately preceding the semester for which the residency classification is sought is considered strong evidence that a person moved to Nebraska primarily to enroll in a Nebraska post-secondary institution.
The student would therefore be considered a non-resident for study purposes for the duration of his or her visit to the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Residency for educational purposes is different from establishing residency for other purposes. As a state institution, the University of Nebraska must comply with the directives of the State Legislature of Nebraska as established by the Council of Regents of the University of Nebraska (B.R.-5.7.1). These regulations provide the basis on which university staff decide whether a person qualifies as a Nebraska resident for educational purposes. In some cases, it may be possible for a person to qualify for a purpose as a Nebraska “resident” (such as obtaining a Nebraska driver`s license) and not meet the standards set by the Board of Regents for state residency. The qualification for residency for study purposes at the University of Nebraska is different from what is normally required to be considered a “resident” of the State of Nebraska. Students who have applied for or been granted permanent residence, refugee status in the United States are eligible to apply for residency in the E – Non-U.S. category.
Citizen. Students applying in this category are still expected to have met the 12-month requirement. Enrolling in a community college, college or university in the State of Nebraska within the 12 months preceding the period for which residency is sought may affect your eligibility. Students who have been granted permanent residency, asylum, or refugee status in the United States can apply for Class E residency. If you are an H-1B visa holder (or the spouse/dependant of an H-1B visa holder) who was recruited (or transferred) to Nebraska for full-time employment, you may be eligible for Category K residency. Persons who believe that they have been wrongly refused study stay may send a letter of complaint to the representative of the institution where they have applied for residence, accompanied by additional documents. H. Nebraska High School Graduate / Nebraska Dream Act.: A person who graduated from a Nebraska high school and meets the requirements of Nebraska law, which is specified in Neb. Rev. §85-502 (8), This form (see below) is often completed by the applicant in addition to the application and standard documentation. This often helps the residency committee make a more informed decision about candidates` residency status. All applicants for admission to the University of Nebraska should be aware that newcomers to the state can be classified as residents in most cases and are always non-residents for educational purposes in accordance with the residency policy of the Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska (revised in 1994). Therefore, upon initial application, all students who did not graduate from high school in Nebraska or who did not live in Nebraska long enough to determine residency status may be considered non-residents until proven they have met all residency requirements.
